Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Tiger Woods’ gutsy performance at last weekend’s Masters tournament — a little more than a year after suffering grievous injuries in a car accident — put old timers in mind of the great Ben Hogan. That’s fitting. In January 1949, while atop golf’s pinnacle, Hogan won a playoff at the Long Beach Open. A week later, at a tournament in Phoenix, Hogan lost a playoff before driving back to Texas with his wife, Valerie. It was a fateful trip on which Ben and Valerie were nearly killed in a head-on collision.
